Before replacing Gitleaks, define the job: scanning old commits, preventing a new credential in a pull request, inspecting a built frontend, or checking whether a detected credential still works. Those are different requirements.

VibeDoctor uses Gitleaks for secret detection. It is an option for a broader repository diagnosis, not an independent replacement engine with a claimed detection advantage.

Start with the scope

Gitleaks documents separate git, dir and stdin modes. A filesystem scan and a history scan can produce different evidence. Removing a token from today’s source does not erase yesterday’s commit.

Your needWhat to evaluate
Find credentials in existing Git historyHistory traversal, branch coverage and redacted reports
Check a directory or build outputFile coverage, exclusions and binary handling
Block new leaks in CIExit codes, changed-commit scope and tested exceptions
Determine whether a credential is activeProvider support and the consequences of network verification
Fix secrets alongside broken routes and privacy issuesA broader diagnosis such as VibeDoctor, alongside secret scanning

Tools to investigate include TruffleHog, detect-secrets, and your repository host’s secret-scanning product. Check their current documentation for your provider and deployment. We have not benchmarked these engines, and names on this list do not imply equivalent coverage.

Why an empty result can mislead

A scan may exclude a generated folder, ignore an allowlisted match, inspect only a commit range, or fail before completing. Write down the scope alongside the result. Inspect a deliberately harmless test fixture to ensure your gate really blocks the pattern you care about; never seed a working credential for a demonstration.

For an AI-written frontend, also inspect what the production JavaScript contains. A value loaded from an environment variable can still become public through a client-side build prefix or an explicit API response.

Where VibeDoctor adds context

VibeDoctor combines applicable scanner output with correctness, flow, code-health and privacy findings. Check whether Gitleaks completed before treating its part of the report as evidence. Use the recovery guidance if an engine is absent or timed out.

The first repair for an exposed credential is to revoke or rotate it with the provider. Then remove the exposure, inspect where it was used and verify the new server-only path. Editing the string alone does not invalidate the old credential.
